Free “Lorem Ipsum” Generator Is a Great Resource

September 2nd, 2009

When I was a kid I tried to teach myself Latin using a program on the computer. After some minor mocking from my family, and life getting busier, I quit. Fast forward to present time, and I’m now a Web developer. As most developers and designers know, you don’t always have the content for a site layout. But, you still need some filler text. A common technique is to use “Latin”, namely lorem ipsum. (See the update at the end of the article for more info.) I came across a site quite a while back, and I thought it was pretty cool: lipsum.com Apparently one of the benefits of using their generated “lorem ipsum” text is that it’s “free from repetition, injected humour, or non-characteristic words etc.”. Well, the truth is, I’m not sure how true that is. (Remember, I never actually learned Latin.) So, if the above claim is false, I apologize in advance. If not, it may turn out to be a cool little resource for you to use.

UPDATE: Okay, a little clarification: Check out Wouter’s comment below, but in short, to be clear, Lorem Ipsum isn’t “valid Latin”… It’s a meaningless mish-mash of Latin(esque)/semi-Latin words. Do a quick Google search or visit Wikipedia for more info. Still a very handy tool!

  1. You do know that lorem ipsum isn’t actually valid latin… it doesn’t mean a thing. Most of the words aren’t even latin but just altered english words.

  2. I do now, lol :D I’m just kidding. What I was also trying to get at in the article is that if there are “offensive” words in there, I wouldn’t know. But, all the same, I think it’s still a good resource. Lorem Ipsum, as you know, is used quite frequently, be it real Latin or not. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lorem_ipsum )

  3. I’ve never seen any of the so called ‘injected humour’ in texts generated by lipsum.com…

Lorem ipsum is great while designing a website, but I generally don’t use lorem ipsum in my HTML (I’m a frontend developer…) because it’s easy to miss some stray lorem ipsum in a site that is about to go live.

As filler text I like to use X’s that are easy to spot. Too many times I found out after a week that there was still some missing content in a site that is already live.

I actually created a little script that converts lorem ipsum into Xxx’s…

  4. @Wouter I haven’t seen the injected humor either… but, I guess it’s out there. :)

Good point about lorem ipsum in HTML as opposed to just, say, a PSD.

Your script sounds cool. Is that something you offer as a download? Feel free to post the link if you want to share it, or if you want me to post it at the end of the article… just give me a shout.

  5. I’ve got a quick and dirty version online for personal use, but I don’t mind sharing it.

If theres a demand, I might just make it available for download (though it isn’t that hard to code yourself).

  6. @Wouter Very cool, thanks. I’ll take a look. I’m sure it’ll come in handy for others as well.

BTW: Loved your site “intro” re: asleep at the keyboard. Cracked me up yesterday, and I can totally relate lol :D Take care.

  7. I’m so busy with work that I haven’t had the time to even get started on a design for my own site.

    Not that I’m complaining…
