Modifying .htaccess For Apache In Windows Vista

October 21st, 2008

Despite many negative things I continue to hear from people who use Vista, personally I’ve only ran into one issue that I thought was worth noting.  When I installed Apache on my desktop as a local server, I ran into a problem.  I wasn’t “allowed” to modify the .htaceess file.  You can open and view the file, but you can’t save it.  It turns out it has to do with user control settings.  Unfortunately, when I was writing this post I went back to try and find the original site I found the solution on, but couldn’t.  This SitePoint forum thread discusses another issue, but does go through the steps necessary to change the user control settings.  But, I’ll go ahead and post them here too.  Hopefully this saves someone else as much frustration (and head-banging) as it did me.

  1. Go to Control Panel.
  2. Select User Accounts.
  3. Choose Turn User Account Control on or off. (If prompted to continue, do so.)
  4. Open your .htaccess file and make the necessary changes.
  5. Remember to turn User Account Control back on when you’re finished.
